A Structural Analysis of State Government Finance in the South- West of Nigeria

Abstract
The allocation of budget of the defunct South- West Regional Government was used together with those of other sub-national governments in selected countries in Africa and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to assess those of four South- West States of Nigeria. The study found that the four South- West States devoted higher percentages of budgets to general administration, governors’ offices, and parliamentarians than obtained during the Regional Government days. The States equally allocated lower percentages of their budgets to agriculture, education and infrastructural development while their internally generated revenue effort was lower than that of not only the Regional Government but was also less than those of other sub-national governments in Africa and OECD countries.
