Abstract
This article examines the role of summitry in AUs engagement with security challenges on the continent, It notes that although it is difficult to measure the success of summitry. because its outputs (summit decisions) depend all external variables for implementation, it is a practice that serves useful purposes. The article demonstrates that summitry in the AU is a forum for regional cooperation and articulation of legal instruments for mandated actions, making it a platform through which strategies for managing security challenges are decided. It however contends {hat the character of the AU. and the nature of international politics in which the decisions of the UN Security Council, dominated by western powers, supersede those of the regional bodies directly affected by those issues contributed to the limited impact of summitry 0n AU management of security challenges
