Perception on Breast Cancer and Relationship Dynamics among Couples in Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria

Abstract
One of the common diseases in women is breast cancer when compared to all cancers. Empirical studies on BC have focused on prevention and management of BC. However, this study explored a dyadic approach to BC and how it impacts upon relationship functioning among couples. Hence, this study described spouses’ and community members’ perception of breast cancer; examined the dynamics in spousal relationships at different phases of the disease and highlights coping mechanisms for women living with breast cancer and their spouses. Hinged on Triangular Theory of Love, the study was conducted through mixed method approach, 660 respondents were recruited using multi-stage sampling techniques. Majority of women living with cancer and their spouses were knowledgeable about breast cancer, but trivialized its signs and symptoms. Also, BC is perceived as life-threatening and requires lots of money for proper diagnosis and treatment. While dynamics in relationship changed as a result of treatment which affected the quality of time couple spent on leisure; decrease in sexual activities; changes in child rearing and pattern of communication. More so, coping strategies adopted included; avoidance of BC thought, genuine love, faith in God and adherence to medical advice. This study highlights barriers that may impact upon treatment due to trivialization of the signs and symptoms of BC. Thus, the need for regular examination and early diagnosis for couples to avert late stage of the disease and a breakdown in spousal relationship.
